This work looks deeper into thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes of injecting relatively cold fluids into hot underground formations. This is relevant to CCS as the injected supercritical CO2 into the subsurface may have a lower temperature than the reservoir rock. The temperature difference is controlled by the surface temperature and its gradient, varying across basins. As an upper bound to this temperature range, we have investigated THM mechanisms raised by water circulation in a Hot Sedimentary Aquifer (HAS). We found that cold water reinjection may give rise to thermal stresses that are transmitted much ahead of the cooled region and are likely to destabilize faults located far away from the doublet and result in induced seismicity.
